
The Claims and Environment Unit is responsible for the resolution of outstanding claims, successful transfer of the fisheries settlement, environmental and First Rights of Refusal matters.
Outstanding claims are: West Coast Harbours; Wairoa and Maioro land blocks; and the Waikato River.
The current priority is implementation of the Waikato River Claim Deed of Settlement.
Core functions are to :
- Achieve implementation of the Waikato River Claim Deed of Settlement;
- Communicate and work effectively with hapuu and Marae to protect, advance, develop and unify Waikato River and environmental interests;
- Promote effective sustainable management of natural resources;
- Enhance First Right of Refusal opportunities for hapuu, Marae and Waikato-Tainui Group Holdings Ltd;
- Develop a post-settlement strategy that identifies and meets the tribe's cultural, social and economic priorities and needs;
- Protect the integrity of the Waikato River Claim;
- Provide legal drafting, research and implementation of the Fisheries settlement.
- Monitoring and participation in local and central government policy, and Waitangi Tribunal hearings.
- Completion of the transfer of Fisheries Settlement Assets.
