Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development

The Waikato-Tainui College for Research and Development overlooks the Waikato River at Hopuhopu, in an idyllic country setting situated in the heart of the Waikato on State Highway 1 between Ngaaruawaahia and Taupiri.

A stone’s throw from Hamilton and Auckland, college features include conferencing facilities, accommodation, dining and catering, a gym and a large sports park. The venue offers a safe and friendly environment with a guard house on entry.

The College grew from a vision of its founder the late Sir Robert Mahuta who was the chief negotiator for the Waikato-Tainui raupatu (confiscation) claim-settlement with the Crown.

At its opening in 2000, the former Maaori Queen Te Arikinui Dame Te Atairangikaahu said:

“Our new college is Tainui’s gift to the motu, to the nation, as well as to its own.
This is a research waananga...based on Maaori kaupapa, purposes and methods.
We intend it to be a place of open enquiry, discussion and a springboard to action.”

The College was established by Waikato-Tainui to memorialise the 1995 Raupatu settlement between the tribe and the Crown.

It is dedicated to research that will benefit the lives of people with an emphasis on Maaori and other indigenous peoples, while being open to research of a more general nature that will benefit New Zealand.

The focus of the College will be on the management of development in the widest context including, but not limited to tribal, cultural, environmental, social and economic development.
