WAIKATO-TAINUI GAMES 2010 - OVERALL WINNERS
Tuatahi: Tuurangawaewae Marae
Tuarua: Taniwha Marae
Tuatoru: Te Tokanganui-a-Noho Marae
ESTIMATED 15,000+ ATTEND THE WAIKATO-TAINUI GAMES 2010
Waikato-Tainui hosted its fourth biennial tribal games in mid February and indications are that a record 15,000 were participating in the venue at one time, under the umbrella of unity and tribal pride!
Te Arataura board member and spokesperson for the games Robert Tukiri says that organisers anticipated between 15 – 20,000 tribal members would converge on the Hopuhopu Sports Complex over two days. He says it is more likely that attendance over the weekend in fact exceeded the 20,000 mark.
“We had 51 Marae registered to compete in 20 sports and activities which is 10-15 Marae more than we have had before,” said Robert.
“The inclusion of new events like surfing, waka ama, tennis, kaumaatua activities and Inclusive Games illustrates the diverse range of activities our people are involved with which not only increased the overall attendance, but also provided opportunities for all age groups to participate along with those with varying disabilities.
“It was a fantastic and well organised event and I thank everyone including all of the coordinators. tribal staff, and the 300 volunteers whose efforts resulted in such a successful turnout.”
