Donna Flavell

Ngaati Te Ata - Tahunakaitoto Marae

Manager, Claims and Environment Unit
Donna started with Waikato-Tainui as part of the graduate team in 1997, working as a legal researcher on the West Coast Harbours claim initially, and then moved into the river claim. She was appointed Environmental Manager shortly after and in 2000, left to take up a role with the Maaori Land Court. During this time she has held various positions within the public sector, including roles as a policy and legislative adviser, policy adviser and project manager with the Department of Courts and Ministry of Justice. In 2003, she was appointed the Registrar of the Waitangi Tribunal, a position she held until returning to work for the tribe in late 2005. Donna, a Waikato University law graduate, has extensive legal experience and is primarily responsible for assisting the co-negotiators with negotiations on the outstanding river claim and managing the transfer of the fisheries settlement.

Tim Manukau Jnr
Ngaati Mahuta, Ngaati Pou, Ngaati Kahukoka - Waahi Pa, Horahora Marae

Environment Manager
Tim has a background in resource management, marine and freshwater ecology, and was appointed Environmental Manager in 2003. With a key focus of his role on the protection and enhancement of the tribe’s natural and physical environment, he was part of the tribe’s River Unit in 1998, assisting with environment issues and outstanding claims. Tim has a degree in biological science and a diploma in environment and management. Tim has an extensive knowledge of environmental issues concerning communities within tribal boundaries and continues to source assistance through his many networks.

Ngaati Whaawhaakia, Kaitumutumu Marae

Legal Analyst
After completing his law degree at Waikato University in 1997, Taipu joined Waikato-Tainui as part of the graduate team, and spent six years with the tribe. He later joined consultancy firm Indigenous Corporate Solutions before returning to work as part of the Claims and Environment Unit in 2006. A specific focus of his role is on the strategic development of all claims related issues.

Erina Watene-Rawiri
Ngaati Mahanga, Te Papa o Rotu Marae

Scientist
Erina first started working on the tribe’s river claim in 1997, after completing her Masters of Science (Honours) at Waikato University. With a background in wild eel and eel aquaculture, Erina then joined NIWA as a fisheries scientist before returning to work for the tribe in 2006.

Ngai Tuahuriri (Ngai Tahu), Tuahiwi Marae

First Rights Researcher (RoFR)
Richard oversees the Right of First Refusal operations, and assists and researches land information with regards to the river claim. Originally from Christchurch, Richard has previously worked for the Department of Conservation and New Zealand Forest Service. He has a Bachelor of Social Sciences (Honours) and a New Zealand Certificate in Draughting (Survey).

Julian Williams
Ngaati Makirangi, Waiti Marae

Environment Officer
Julian joined Waikato-Tainui’s Environment Unit in 2003. Graduating with a Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Resource Environment Planning and Geography, Julian has had an interest in the environment for several years and has previously worked for Fonterra and Waahi Whaanui Trust. His current role focuses on the tribe’s environmental interests at local, regional and national levels.

Ngaati Whakamarurangi, Ngaati Tipa - Motakotako Marae

Environment Officer
Tahi graduated from Waikato University in 2006 with a Bachelor of Arts, majoring in Maaori and Policy Analysis and has previously worked as a Documents Officer for Affco New Zealand. A former Te Kauhanganui representative for his marae, it has long been an aspiration of Tahi’s to work for the tribe. Tahi joined the Claims and Environment team in 2007 and has been strategically involved with the Waikato River Claim providing a lot of the research and analysis required around environmental issues. Tahi looks forward to a cleaner and healthier tupuna awa.

Cheri Van Schravendijk
Te Ati Haunui-a-Paapaarangi, Ngaati Apa

Scientist
Cheri relocated from Christchurch in 2008 with her whaanau to take up her job with Waikato-Tainui, and is passionate about plant restoration and working with local communities within environmental management and sustainability. Cheri has a degree in Environmental Management from Lincoln University and completed her Masters in Science (Plant Ecology) at the University of Canterbury. A key focus of her role is protecting Waikato-Tainui native flora and developing a restoration strategy for the Waikato River between Karapiro and Te Puuaha.

Ngaati Te Ata, Ngai Tu - Ngaa Hau E Whaa Marae

Claims Administrator
Liza first joined the Waikato-Tainui Maaori Trust Board in 1996 as an Accounts Officer. She then took on the role of Property Officer at the tribe’s commercial arm Waikato-Tainui Group Holdings for four years, managing residential properties and assisting with commercial lease management. Liza brings a wealth of knowledge to the Claims and Environment Unit, and over 17 years of administration experience.

Ngamahi Turner
Ngaati Amaru, Te Awamaarahi Marae

Project Officer
Ngamahi has been part of the Claims and Environment Unit since 2006, having left a successful career in the hospitality, travel and tourism industry to take up the position of Project Officer.  Assisting with administration, Ngamahi coordinated a number of projects as part of the tribe’s river claim and has recently been working in the Statutory Board Establishment Committee secretariat.
