Standing Committees have been introduced to involve the tribe's parliament Te Kauhanganui, in the development of social and tribal objectives for Waikato-Tainui.

Simply put, standing committees are think tanks.

Five committees have been established under the following kaupapa areas:

  • Education
  • Maatauranga
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Resource Management
  • Marae Development

Generally each committee will provide Te Arataura and the Tribal Development Unit with advice on:

i. needs within Waikato-Tainui under the five kaupapa areas;

ii. initiatives that contribute to the future direction of the tribe;

iii. initiatives to monitor and liaise with providers of services;

iv. initiatives to identify and remove barriers that hinder progress and achievement;

v. Treaty of Waitangi, Article III policy - to assist with increasing Waikato-Tainui progress and/or achievement.

Members of standing committees must be elected members of Te Kauhanganui.

Committees generally comprise of 7-11 members however, membership is at the discretion of the committees themselves.
